Formation History

The Central Carolina Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club

The Central Carolina Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club was founded on January 28, 1996. A group of ten Cavalier owners and fanciers met to form a local specialty club to promote interest in the breed. Club officers were chosen and Membership, Constitution and Bylaws, Education, and Match committees were formed at this meeting. The American Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club recognized the CCCKCSC in February, 1996, as a regional club affiliate.

The Founding members of the club were: Bill Nelson, who served as president from 1996 until July of 2008, Darlene Petralia, Joyce Board, who served as Sec/treasurer until 2004, Jane Theader, who served on the BOD from 1996 to 1999, Anne Theader, who served on the BOD from 1996 to 1999, Lynn Lake, who has served on the BOD from 1996 to the present, and Tara Palmer.

Since the beginning, the club has grown in membership and has increased the number of activities it regularly conducts. The club has progressed from holding annual fun matches to major specialty shows. The club holds member meeting six times per year to conduct club business, and starting in November of 1996, present programs of interest and educational value. Program topics have included grooming the Cavalier, the Cavalier breed standard, Cavalier health concerns, Heart and eye clinics, responsible dog ownership, Cavalier rescue, nutrition for Cavaliers, Judging and Showing.  We have also offered handling and obedience classes, and performed Canine Good Citizen testing.

Other activities include raising funds for the Club, ACKCSC (our national parent club), the ACKCSC Charitable Trust and the Charitable Rescue Trust. We have supported entries at other regional clubs matches and shows and at local all breed shows.

The club year runs from June 1 through May 31.  Club meetings are held July, September, November, January, March and May. Starting in 2003, the January meeting has been the awards banquet to recognize individual members’ service to the club and to recognize members who earned AKC titles, therapy dog certification and CGC certificates in the previous year.  Boards of Director Meetings are held six times per year, in alternating months from Club meetings; August, October, December, February, April and June.
